Thris contemplated the hazy pinnacle of the White Helixai in the distance. Its Halls of shining light had drawn him when he had been new to Ezam, just as the Red Helixai’s fiery caverns had drawn Ky. They had debated the merits of each to hone their oratory but Thris had ceased visiting the White when Archae Kald had favoured him with a mentorship. The Archae had pointed out that the coloured mountains were pretty, but so were lacewings, and no Dane had ascended by contemplating them.

Thris roused as he sensed Ky’s resonance and guessed he would drop from the peak, a perilous maneuver Ky delighted in, and one at odds with his fear of transiting. And then Ky flashed into view, as Thris had predicted, but as he landed on the ledge, his momentum propelled him forward in a series of ungainly hops and he beat his wings as if he had intended to fly into the cavern.

Thris smiled wryly. ‘Your jumping skills have not improved.’

‘Nor your Guideship ones,’ retorted Ky. ‘You have lost the shekinah again.’

‘She is with Ash, as you no doubt know.’

‘Then let us hope his ability to resist her resonance is as strong as yours,’ said Ky. Thris said nothing and Ky’s expression grew serious. ‘Or are you here to shore up your strength?’

‘The Guideship is a great honour.’

‘But not an easy one,’ acknowledged Ky as he bedded his wings. ‘The shekinah has a talent for drawing danger. Prime-archae Serith—’

‘Still recovers from his communings with the Black Obsidian Stele,’ finished Thris smoothly. ‘In the meantime, I continue to prepare the shekinah for transiting. To do so safely she must sense subtle shifts in resonance, understand rift forms, and cope with strange castes. I expect this part of her training to take several cycles.’ Thris eyed Ky meaningfully. ‘Without such skills, it is perilous for any caste to transit.’

‘I . . .’ began Ky, but at that moment, Ash appeared from the cavern, wings a flutter in agitation.

‘The shekinah left while I played,’ he said. ‘I do not know where she is.’
